Climate Action Network for
International Educators - CANIE

The clock is ticking
We need to radically and immediately reverse course on emissions to avert catastrophic climate change. Global warming is already impacting our lives; record temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events are being seen around the world and are particularly severe in many of the main source countries for international students. The 2018 IPCC Report suggested we now have 10 years left at most to act but there is a growing consensus that the next few years are critical.

Emissions have to be cut by 45% by 2030 to have any chance of keeping global warming within 1.5°C above pre-industrial baseline levels by the end of the century. The longer we delay action, the sharper the necessary emissions cuts will have to be.
What is CANIE?
CANIE is a grassroots initiative formed by international education practitioners from around the world who see the need and the opportunity for our sector to step up and act on climate.

CANIE serves as a platform to bring the sector together to act as a catalyst for action. Our aim is to develop and share resources, training and events to help individuals take action and to drive change within their institutions. You can sign up to become a member of CANIE and be kept informed of upcoming events or useful resources. We also collect examples of good practice by institutions, governments, and individuals so we can share them widely: please tell us about any great examples you've seen or ideas you have. You can reach us at @CANIEglobal on Twitter or email us at info@can-ie.org.

Dr Pii-Tuulia Nikula, Senior Lecturer, EIT, New Zealand
Kia ora! I am an international education management & policy scholar from New Zealand. Besides academic publishing and teaching, I engage actively with practitioners in order to enhance the research-practice dialogue. Lately, I have focussed on the climate crisis and its solutions.

By collaboration, we can initiate more climate action across the international education sector. By 2025, I am hoping to see reduced emissions, climate savvy learners and a commitment from the sector and institutional leaders to tackle climate crisis.

Ailsa Lamont, Director Pomegranate Global, Australia
International education comes with an unavoidable carbon cost. We need to acknowledge that cost and articulate more clearly why global experience is so valuable that it's worth paying AND what we are going to do to reduce and offset it.

I want to put my years of experience in university international roles to use by helping the sector take collective action. We know that a global education gives you super powers in problem-solving, communication and collaboration skills so who better than international educators to take action with real impact!

My interest in climate change is that we have to address the issues of climate change in internationalization in Higher Education and ensure that students have the skills/ competencies and eco-literacy to cultivate better relationships with the most important stakeholder of all, the Planet!!
Marianne Mensah, International Executive Director at Université Côte d’Azur, France.
She focuses on developing international partnerships which foster excellence, innovation and cross-disciplinary projects to address societal challenges. She teaches a course on the SDGs, cities and climate change, and climate change and risks at Université Côte d’Azur. Prior to joining UCA, Marianne worked for international development agencies. At the French Development Agency, she served the group as a Regional Coordinator where she worked on environment, energy, and education projects in Africa. She also worked for the AFD Corporate University, where she developed courses on energy efficiency, climate change, project management and pedagogies using new technologies of information and communication. Prior to AFD, she worked for UNDP, UNOPS and UNAIDS on project coordination, impact assessments and performance reviews in Brazil, Madagascar and various countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.  She contributed to publications on innovations for sustainable development and on innovative finance. She holds a Master in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School of Government and a Master in Economics from Sciences-Po Paris.

I've worked the better part of 20 years to promote international student mobility. But in recent years I've found myself reckoning with serious cognitive dissonance, knowing full well that student, faculty and staff air travel whose CO2 emissions aren't offset are exacerbating the climate crisis humankind faces. I'm thankful to be a part of CANIE's work to raise awareness about the need for bold action.

I love the environment and diving is my passion. I hate to see our oceans and environment getting trashed around us. My business specialisation has evolved over the years as new multimedia possibilities have emerged but at heart I'm an innovator who adopts new technologies to help the sector do what it does better. Technology can play a part in reducing the carbon footprint of the international education business. Having spent 22 years working with large and small, public and private universities & colleges, schools and departments around the world I want to be part of the solution.
CJ Tremblay, Global Marketing & Instructional Products and Programs at Paragon Testing Enterprises, Vancouver, Canada
I'm a passionate international education and English-language testing marketer with more than 7 years in the industry (and some years before that working in sports and printing!) and I am an unapologetic supporter of women and of action on climate change.
I’ve spent the last several years of my career in complete awe of the privilege I have in traveling the world and supporting individuals with dreams of studying in and immigrating to Canada.  I’m trying to reconcile the immense carbon footprint of those activities with my commitment to leaving the planet in better shape than when I got here and supporting the movement of the Canadian international education industry to do the same!

Dr. Adrienne Fusek, Director of Faculty-Led Study Abroad, Global Affairs, San Diego State University, USA
I have supported students and faculty members engage in international experiences since 2008 helping thousands participate in short-term programs.  While academically important and often personally transformational, I have a hard time convincing myself that the benefits of these programs outweigh their contribution to the global climate crisis.  It’s past time for the talented people in the sector to create and implement strategies to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of our work; both broadly and on our campuses.  I’m delighted to partner with others in the CANIE network to influence the future of the field toward this goal.
